Koto, Ikebana and Tea; Experience Japanese Arts at Fabyan Garden

Experience Japanese traditions at the Fabyan Japanese Garden Centennial Celebration on Sunday September 12th.  Celebration events include tea ceremony demonstrations, guided garden tours, an ikebana display and a concert, and will take place between 12 and 5 p.m.

Demonstrations of the Tea Ceremony, an ancient Japanese ritual, by Chicago tea master Joyce Kubose will take place at noon and 1 p.m.  Seating is limited and reservations are required.  Sponsored jointly by Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley, Geneva Garden Club and Friends of Fabyan, the volunteer groups responsible for preservation of the historic Fabyan Japanese Garden, the tea demonstrations will be free of charge.

Following the Tea Ceremony, guided tours of the Garden featuring theory, history and early photographs will be led at 2 and 3 p.m.

At 4 p.m. the last of the Harmony in Nature Concert Series, sponsored by The PrivateBank, will take place in the Garden.  This concert features two members from the Spring Valley Koto Players on the Japanese koto, a 13-stringed traditional instrument.

The historic garden Tea House will be open and decorated for a tea ceremony.  A display of ikebana, Japanese flower arrangements, will be located in garden structures.  Also plan to enjoy a stroll, as the Japanese Garden in September is particularly lovely, with late flowering plants enhancing the tranquil beauty of the garden.

All events are free of charge, but donations are encouraged.  The Japanese Garden is located in the Fabyan West Forest Preserve on Route 31, just North of Fabyan Parkway in Geneva.  Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley operates the Fabyan Japanese Garden and the Fabyan Villa Museum for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County.

Baseball enthusiast, vintage ball player and historian Bill Rose will display more than 50 miniature baseball stadiums at the Geneva History Center on Sunday, September 12 from noon-4 p.m.  These incredibly detailed miniatures range from America’s oldest stadiums to modern ball parks.

Rose is a founding member of the Midway Marauders Vintage Base Ball Club, has played three seasons with the Geneva Rovers and currently plays for the Somonauk Blue Stockings.  He has had a lifelong love affair with America’s game and began collecting miniature stadiums in the 1990s.  He is particularly fond of the older ball diamonds, such as Ebbets Field and Forbes Field.  Rose noted, “I enjoy the history of baseball and the early stadiums shaped the game and the way we played.”  Rose will be on hand to answer questions.

In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to visit the Geneva History Center’s sports exhibition, Beyond the Score: Moments in Geneva Sports History.
